Beeper is now free

Announcing our new Business Model

TLDR: We are changing Beeper’s pricing

Beeper is now free to use! Previously, Beeper cost $10 per month.

Before you get your hopes up too much… we still have a waitlist that we are working through. But as soon as we send you an invite, you’ll be able to start using Beeper for free. Sign up on beeper.com.

Later, we will introduce an optional paid subscription with extra features.

Why make this change?

When we started building Beeper, our initial idea was to create a Superhuman-like app for pro users. Since we were building an app exclusively for professional users, it made sense to require a monthly fee.

But over time, I realized that my heart wasn’t in building a chat app just for pros. While I love using Superhuman and other high efficiency apps, I knew that if we focused exclusively on productivity, we would suck the joy out of chat.

Chat is not like email. At best, email is a to-do list that other people add things to. At worst, it’s an inbox filled with transactional alerts and spam. I don’t open my email inbox and feel happy.

For me, chat is very different. It is one of the few places online where I truly smile 😃. It’s a fun, vibrant place where I hang out with friends, share photos with family and work with my colleagues. I want to preserve that amazing feeling, and stop chat from turning into an email-like experience.

So, we adjusted our idea slightly and shifted to building what we think is the best chat app on Earth. We want you to fall in love with Beeper, make it your default chat app, and invite your friends to chat on Beeper as well.

But up until now, we charged everyone on Beeper a $10/month subscription fee. Most people are not ready to pay for a chat app, especially given that all other chat apps are free*.

Today, we are making Beeper free for everyone.

* Most chat apps are offered at no-cost to you, but come with dubious associated business models (harvesting your data to show ads, hardware ecosystem lock-in, etc).

How can we offer something this great for free?

Throughout 2022, we focused a lot on reducing the cost of running Beeper. Now we’re passing those savings along to you. We also recognized that in order to make it easy for you to recommend Beeper to your friends, Beeper needed to be free to use.

How will we make money?

Later, we will launch an optional paid subscription, which will include additional features like larger chat history backup, access to multiple network connections, and more. By making Beeper free, more people will feel comfortable sharing it with their friends, enabling more people to start using Beeper. Through the optional paid subscription, we will earn enough money to run the app.

The founders of Farcaster wrote a post on monetizing via subscriptions – we agree with it all!

FAQ

  • If you paid for Beeper already, thank you so much for your trust and support! As a token of our gratitude, we are pleased to offer you a free lifetime access to our paid subscription.

  • How much will the optional subscription cost? It will cost $5-10 USD per month.

  • Which features will be part of the free plan, and which will be in the paid subscription?

    • We plan to shift only a few currently free features to paid, and introduce a number of new features (adding multiple accounts per network) specifically for paid subscribers.

I have been on the list for more than a year now – I first heard about Beeper on Leo Laporte’s show. I would LOVE to somehow actually one day get the invite. Is it expected to be on the list for over a year? Thanks!

I would love a code if you still have it. I’m honestly considering paying just support the devs if it’s really good.

Now I’m sad that I didn’t have the cash to prepay my first year and jump the list. I plan to sub regardless but I’m one who prefers to pay more up front as an “endowment” rather than pay monthly forever. But on the flip side now I’ll tell everyone I know to get on the waiting list. Keep up the great work, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to support this software which has become a huge part of my daily life.

I’ve been using Beeper for a week now, and I’m surprised to see it work so far with the different networks I use. [I keep waiting for someone’s API or bridge to stop working.] Would appreciate more clarity re: Beeper Plus. Thanks and congratulations.

I’m stoked about Beeper, but I’ve got a dash of skepticism in the mix too. My worry is that I might get all in with this app, only to discover down the line that it’s going to cost me a tenner each month to keep it from being crippled. The whole idea of adding an extra layer of software also raises an eyebrow for me, even though their privacy policy looks pretty solid on the surface.

True! I’m willing to take the risk personally but those are reasonable concerns. It’s also exciting to see something like this pop up though; it shows there’s still life in the mass production tech world.

Yes! As you’ll see in my other long comment on this blog, I currently use one of my Apple IDs to test iMessage in Beeper, and use my other Apple ID for iMessage in Sunbird, which is a competing app that serves literally the exact same purpose and functionality as Beeper. I could be wrong, but Sunbird has gotten a lot of media attention as of late, in major tech publications such as PC Magazine, among others, and I highly suspect that this is one of the main reasons Beeper changed their main business model from Paid Subscription to Free, back in March. You also no longer need an Apple computer or other Apple device to use as a relay or hub for iMessages sent in Beeper. Instead, they appear to be using the same Mac OS virtual machine implementation that Sunbird uses, to relay your iMessages from an Android device or Windows PC.

Currently Beeper functionality with iMessage is a bit more complete/stable than Sunbird, but as far as basic iMessage functionality ie: no more green bubbles, and full quality media when texting from Android.. Both apps work very well and I’ve had no major problems. Sunbird is still in Alpha Testing phase though, hasn’t even made it to beta yet, so still lots of testing and improvements being done. Believe it or not, as long as some of you are saying you’ve waited to be invited to Beeper, I’ve read that Sunbird’s Alpha testing program is even harder to get accepted into. I don’t know how I got so lucky to have been invited into both Beeper’s Early Access Program, and Sunbird’s Alpha Tester program (as it is very difficult to get into… Only a few thousand users in the country have access)… But what I will say is the same thing that others have said on this blog.. which is that the wait will be well worth it… I can promise you that!!

I was actually on the wait list for 306 days according to the email I just received last week informing me that I had been accepted into the early access program for the app. Just be patient. For how long?…I can’t say, because it seems like some people have been on the wait list for way longer than me, but I was invited/accepted into beeper after 306 days on the waitlist. However I signed on to the wait list pretty early on just like I did for Sunbird, a competing app with the same exact features and purpose… Namely iMessage on Android. However Sunbird only has an Android app. I have found that beeper has been more reliable as far as specific features in iMessage like replies reactions and sending and receiving of media, typing indicators, and read receipts. As such, since I’m testing both apps, I currently use Sunbird with one of my iMessage accounts/Apple ID’s, and Beeper with a newly created Apple ID, that I created simply to test beeper separately from Sunbird without causing the apps to interfere with each other when using iMessage functionality. Beeper is the only one that used to synchronize with iMessage on my iPad when sending iMessages from my Android phone, however, ths message synchronization feature Just went live in Sunbird recently as well….So it’ll be interesting to see which company releases their app first for the general public.

    Hi,
On 7/19 I got a text from 415*230*2767 saying that it was my turn to get Beeper and that an email had just been sent to me on how to set it up. Will Beeper will notify me this way? I did not receive an email, nothing in Spam either. And if it is a legit text, is there any way to resend/retrieve that email?
    Thanks.

Not gonna lie, this announcement fills me with dread.

I am very happy paying, I do _not_ want you to sell out to advertisers or dubious investors.
I would’ve preferred paying $10, _and_ sponsoring up to 4 more friends at $10 a person, rather than have any chance of this app becoming a privacy nightmare, which it will constantly be under danger of becoming.

You instantly made me much more suspicious and I will be scrutinizing your every step. I also won’t be able to recommend beeper to anyone before you have a year or so of track record that is completely spotless and pristine.

I wish you the best of luck, I want this to succeed.

I was approved today and I’m very impressed with the app. I am also an alpha tester for sunbird and frankly they are really behind, but they will catch up. My personal take on the business model is that it’s okay to have a subscription based access to premium features. There is value in an app that replaces a bunch of other apps. However don’t lose sight that all those other apps are free. I think even $5 a month is more than most people would pay for something they already have for free even if it’s a more convenient interface. You’ll get some premium users of course but it’s much better to get 500 million subscribers at $10/year than 1 million at $5/month. Just my opinion.
